Make yourself familiar with the standard of the breed. Disreputable or unethical breeders will try and sell you the "rare blue basset." A blue basset - that is a dog whose coat seems to give off a blue sheen -is not only not desirable but is considered a ticking time bomb for health issues. Blue bassets are genetically unstable and no reputable breeder would breed for them or sell one if they happened to have it. These dogs tend to develop numerous health problems. As well bassets do not normally have blue eyes. If someone is selling you a rare blue eyed basset - don't buy it. Blue eyes are indicative of possible genetic weaknesses which can lead to serious health issues.
